A zany exhibition filled with all manner of scientifically based features is Friday Night Science at Allan Hancock College. The event’s aim is to fill all those who attend—both parents and children—with a sense of wonderment.

“Kids will see explosions, fireworks, even a full ostrich skeleton,” Rob Jorstad, physics instructor and Friday Night Science creator, said in a press release. “We have some sensational new demonstrations. This is going to be an epic night and a physics ‘phrenzy.’”

With experts standing by to answer questions regarding anatomy, onlookers will be able to see full human, ostrich, and horse skeletons, as well as the partial skeletons of other animals.

Another interesting new feature to the science fest will give people a chance to test themselves with a variety of mathematical brainteasers. This part of the event will provide kids with a hands-on, interactive experience to learn how to flesh out perplexing equations.

Making another appearance this year, the popular “Name that Rock” exhibit will allow attendees to talk to a geologist and get answers to all of their mineral-related musings. There will be nearly 50 interactive demonstrations throughout the evening.

“There will be crazy lights, crazy mirrors, crazy sounds, pretty much crazy everything when it comes to our demonstrations,” Jorstad said in the release.

Almost 100 Hancock students will be assisting instructors in various demonstrations, and will help host a barbecue fundraiser to benefit students in need of scholarships in mathematics, engineering, and science programs. Guests can purchase a tri-tip sandwich, drink, and chips for $9.

This year’s Friday Night Science will take place on Friday, May 2 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in and around the science building (building M) on the Allan Hancock College campus in Santa Maria.
