ā€œStudents will learn the skills and earn the certificates needed to work as a lifeguard at any pool or water park,ā€ said instructor Deborah Schuetz-Jones in a press release. ā€œWe truly have the best instructors around, including some former Hancock lifeguards.ā€

The class starts July 11 and runs through Aug. 4. Tuesday classes will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on the college’s Santa Maria campus. Saturday instruction will take place at the pool on the same campus from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with an hour for lunch.

The course trains students in surveillance skills to help recognize and prevent injuries, rescue skills in the water and on land, and general lifeguarding duties. Students will also receive six hours of CPR training and 15 hours of specific first aid information and skills required for California public safety personnel.

Open registration continues through June 14. Students who will be juniors or seniors in high school in the fall are eligible to enroll in the class and receive college credit.

ā€œNot many community colleges in the state offer a four-week lifeguard certification course like we do, especially during the summer,ā€ Shuetz-Jones said in the release. ā€œThis class is an amazing opportunity, especially for high school students who can work as a lifeguard all year.ā€
