Turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie—about 75 single parents who attend Allan Hancock College received everything necessary for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 21 at the ninth annual Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) Turkey Event.

The food was paid for through monetary donations given by college faculty and staff, according to Hancock spokesperson Jessica Sheaff, who said the donations were then used to purchase the food at discounted prices from Spencer’s Fresh Markets.

The event, Sheaff said, aims at relieving some of the economic hardships faced by students involved with CARE, a program that offers financial assistance, resources, and support for single parent students.

Single parent students attending both the Santa Maria campus and the Lompoc Valley Center were able to pick up their Thanksgiving meals from CARE staffers on Nov. 21.
