Two hours of work yielded 2,000 pounds of oranges for the FoodBank of Santa Barbara County on Earth Day, April 22.
It was all in a day’s work for the 17 volunteers, who are seniors at St. Joseph High School enrolled in Christian Witness classes. Frederick Ranch in Nipomo was host to the FoodBank orange harvest, the fruits of which were distributed to local families over the following three days.
A press release sent out by St. Joseph said the students also learned about the economic hardships of many families in the Santa Maria area, and the need for fresh produce.
Almost 60 seniors are enrolled in the school’s Christian Witness classes, and they’ve offered their services in the community over the last semester. In addition to Earth Day citrus-picking, students volunteered at the Tunnel Elementary School carnival on April 20 and the Family Kite Festival and Eric’s Run on April 21.
