President Obama’s speech in Cairo was very eloquently presented. It is a known fact that today there is no peace in the Middle East. But I did not read of the president indicating his knowledge of how Israel, in compliance with the United States, evicted its own citizens from the Gaza strip and how instead […]

Read our lips: No new taxes
Our elected state officials have no respect for us. We trusted them—we voted—yet, they seem only to seek personal gain and power. They screw up. Then, they come to us for bailouts again, and again, and again. Like little children, they run from responsibility. Are any of them mature? Dependable? This situation is sad. Our […]
What are your summer plans?

Sure, corporations will take care of us
Play it again, Sam. You know the tune—it’s the one about “tax cuts.” Apparently, it’s the only song that you and Abel and the rest of the Republicans know. The State of California is breathing its last breath and the corporate vultures are circling overhead. This is what you wanted, right? “Starve the beast” and […]
A message to Democrats in Sacramento
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has fought a valiant battle for the past seven years, but with a Democratic majority in the state government his efforts on behalf of taxpayers are sadly diluted. As long as the California voters continue to elect Democrats, the tax-and-spend Sacramento mentality will continue to the great detriment of the State of […]
Don’t take his word for gospel
Dick Cheney is playing the no-lose blame game because there is no way to prove a negative. If there are no foreign terrorist attacks on the United States his status will be no worse than it is. If there is an attack, he will gain status with “I told you so.” It’s the same game […]

Stefanie Hassett administrative assistant “Fortunately, we haven’t been affected to badly but we are still watching how we spend our money.” Corey Thompson smiley face artist “I don’t know. I’m just going with the flow.” Veralynn Leos Del Taco enthusiast “Looking for jobs like crazy! No one is hiring! Other than that, just eating at […]
Union banks are not public troughs
As major banks with local branches continue to ask for our taxpayer dollars in bailout funds, we see two themes emerge as excuses for their current despicable condition and reasons why they should not be taken over by the federal government, reorganized, and resold to the private sector. Everyone has memories of President Franklin D. […]
How worried or concerned are you about the swine flu (H1N1)?
Antonio Steadman student “Not very worried at all. My health is quite exquisite.” Renee Sahagun area supervisor “I’m not really worried about it until it becomes a big issue.” Minerva Camarillo student/mother “If I caught it I would be very worried since there is no vaccine to cure it yet.” Kevin Brewer student/restaurant host “I […]
Art lives here
First of all, I would like to express my appreciation to Shelly Cone and the Santa Maria Sun for doing a wonderful job of reporting on the art scene in Santa Maria. The article about the Art in the Garden event at the Santa Maria Inn (“Spotlight on Mom, spotlight on art,” May 7) was […]
Who invited her?
Where does Wanda Sykes get off blasting the former President, Rush Limbaugh, and the GOP? I find her humor tasteless and inappropriate. She is not just guilty of bad taste; she is guilty of not being funny. I can’t believe no one read her material beforehand and still let her deliver that hate-spewed diatribe. She […]
Support the Obama health plan
Obama’s public health insurance option would save us up to 30 percent on our insurance premiums by being more efficient and driving down prices across the board, according to a Commonwealth Fund report. The insurance companies are against the proposal because if the system is efficient they will not make as much money in profit.
