The Santa Maria Sharks, the first youth rugby league in Santa Barbara County, is currently signing up players for its inaugural season.

The league will have a registration booth at St. Joseph High School’s flag football game on Aug. 6, followed by a sign-up date at the Santa Maria Walmart, 2220 S. Bradley Road, on Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

League president James Gentry started the league to introduce rugby to children aged 10 to 18 throughout the Central Coast. Practices begin in November, with the season opening in January. All games will be played at Fesler Junior High, located at 1100 E. Fesler St. in Santa Maria.

Players can sign up online at riseandachieve.com or at the league’s booths. The cost is $80. Volunteer coaches are also needed.

For more information, call James or Debra Gentry at 934-3775.
