Jill (Zoey Deutch) is a young woman navigating her life and career as a baker in San Francisco and coping with the death of her younger sister, Isabelle (Ciaro Bravo), from cystic fibrosis. With intense pressure from her boss, Chef Bastien (Nick Offerman), and an f-boy hookup at work named Tyler (Toby Sandeman), Jill is feeling unsure of her future as a baker, and she gets drunk and calls her sister’s phone number, leaving her a voicemail.
This becomes her new source of comfort—leaving voicemails into the ether updating her late sister on her life, pitfalls and all. What she doesn’t know is that Wes (Nick Robinson) has acquired her sister’s old phone number and has been listening to her voicemails and forming a crush.
What follows is the usual rom-com-drama tropes—he finds her, charms her, can’t bring himself to tell her, she finds out and is furious. Director Leah McKendrick isn’t bringing anything wildly new to the table with this film, but it is charming and cute, nonetheless. If you’re a fan of the genre, it’s certainly worth curling up on the couch for. It’ll scratch the rom-com itch you have, but have tissues handy! (118 min.)
