The Santa Maria Library has several events lined up to kick off the new year.
Experience a Chinese New Year Celebration with Shiu-Ching McSparron, who brings songs, dances, and fun as she helps celebrate the new year with children ages 5 and older on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
A free ticket is required for admission to special events, and seating is limited. Tickets will be available in the Childrenās Room of the Library beginning Jan. 7.
Then, join Sherry Shahan for a writing workshop that focuses on molding short stories and simple nonfiction pieces into publishable shape. āBreaking into Print: Short and Sweetā will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Jan. 23 in Shepard Hall. Shahan will discuss the childrenās magazine market and various newspapers that publish stories and articles for young readers.
Writers are asked to bring a working draft of a short story (fewer than 650 words) geared toward children in the 6 to 8 age group. Shahan has more than 30 published childrenās books to her name, as well as scores of magazine and newspaper credits. The workshop is open to adults and students 16 years and older.
Finally, tickets will be available beginning Jan. 26 for āMagic and Mayhem with Shawn McMaster,ā who will shatter ideas of what a magician is like. Heās appeared in clubs, on campuses, and in theaters across the country, including Las Vegas, off-Broadway, the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, and most recently on the Fox MyNetwork TVās Masters of Illusion.
āMagic and Mayhem with Shawn McMasterā will take place at 7 p.m. on Feb. 11 in Shepard Hall. The show is open to adults and students ages 14 and older. Free tickets for this event will be available in the Childrenās Room of the Library beginning Jan. 26.
