Allan Hancock College’s Ann Foxworthy Gallery is a peaceful space, tucked down the main hall of the college’s Academic Resource Center. Located next to the library, and a brief walk from any Hancock parking lot, the gallery is currently showing its annual Fine Arts Student Art Show, which highlights the efforts of students from a wide variety of visual arts classes.

So many media, styles, and colors grab the attention as one walks into the gallery, it’s hard to decide where to start! A series of self-portraits from Marti Fast’s life drawing class adorn the wall left of the entrance, offering a great place to start.

The pieces are grouped by class, which allows the viewer to enjoy the works of several peers side-by-side, whether they are oil paintings or the results of digital or graphic design. Dotted throughout the gallery, sitting stoically on pedestals, are three ceramic creations of Bob Nichols’ students. A solid hour or two can be spent enjoying the various pieces, each based on their own merit.

Hancock is brimming with skill in many disciplines, but, thankfully, the visual arts department gets its own space on campus in the Ann Foxworthy Gallery. Those interested in the exhibit can view it during regular school hours, and can also meet the artists at a reception event at the gallery on Feb. 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Arts Editor Joe Payne is duly impressed. Contact him at jpayne@santamariasun.com.
