“Earth as Art 3” is the latest exhibit at the Wildling Art Museum, 2928 San Marcos Ave. in Los Olivos. The exhibit will be on display through May 13.
Organized by the United States Geological Survey, the exhibit showcases images of Earth’s surface chosen for their aesthetic beauty, rather than scientific value. Using digital satellite imagery, the exhibit posits that Earth is its own art.
The “Earth as Art 3” collection follows the “Earth as Art 1” and “Earth as Art 2” exhibitions, which have been shown at the Library of Congress and in museums and art centers throughout the country.
The pictures have a unique connection to the Central Coast, as the Goleta-based Santa Barbara Research Center built the basic sensor used in the early Landsats during the late ’60s and ’70s, which were launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base to get them into polar orbits.
In conjunction with the show, the Wildling will present “Aerial Abstractions: Photographs by Bill Dewey” through March 18. The photographs from Santa Barbara resident Dewey reveal the California landscape as seen from his plane since the early ’70s.
