The Neal Taylor Nature Center at Cachuma Lake is kicking off summer with activities for kids.
The first is a two-day birding workshop teaching children the basics of bird identification, scheduled for June 26 and 28 from 8:45 a.m. to noon. Sponsored by the Cachuma Lake Recreation Area, the special workshop will be led by a professional naturalist and volunteers, and includes information on bird habitats and how to use field guides and binoculars.
Children will spend time in the park, on a pontoon boat, and in the classroom. Participants will also receive a snack and a bird guide. Registration is required. The fee is $15 per child.
Then on July 21, children ages 7 to 15 will have the opportunity to learn fishing from experts at the Nature Center’s Kids Fishing Workshop. The program begins at 8:45 a.m. on the center’s lawn, where children will be divided into groups to learn about knot tying; casting; trout fishing; rigging for bass, crappie, and blue gill; and saltwater fishing. Local anglers will teach all the segments, and parents are welcome to observe. The program ends at noon and is limited to the first 50 children.
