Local photographers take note: The application period for the New Times Media Group’s annual Winning Images competition is fast approaching. Beginning Sept. 12, applications for the annual photography competition can be found on the Sun and New Times websites. And on Sept. 15, both papers will run an application in print. But don’t waste time, the entry deadline for applications is Oct. 3 at 5 p.m., and applicants must meet certain requirements.

Photographers must provide print and digital copies of their entries. Prints must be 5-by-7 or 11-by-14, all mounted on an 11-by-14 board, without mat. Let’s say that again in case you missed it, no mat! Digital versions must be at least 300 dpi at 5 inches. There is a $5 entry fee per photo and no photos submitted last year may be entered.
There are several categories to choose from when submitting to Winning Images. Adult photographers can submit to categories including land/seascape, flora, architecture, people, animal, travel, and an open category. All youth photographers will be judged in one category. There is also a Best of Show selected by judges. All of the photographs—with the exception of the travel category—must be shot in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
The first, second, and third place winners in each category will be featured in the New Times and Sun for the issues of Nov. 3. The winners’ prints will show at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art from Nov. 3 through 7 as well. A reception event is scheduled for Nov. 3 at SLOMA, but is only open to artists who entered Winning Images.

So do you have what it takes? Are your images worthy of the first, second, or third place? Well, there’s only one way to find out. Send in your snapshots soon, people, if you want a piece of Winning Images 2016!
