The Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra will introduce 900 third-grade students to a performance of Peter and the
Wolf
under the direction of Maestro John Farrer on Feb. 16 at Pacific Christian Center. Peter and the Wolf is a composition by Sergei Prokofiev written in 1936 after his return to the Soviet Union. Dian Borad-Mirken will narrate, accompanied by the orchestra.

Peter and the Wolf is scored for flute, oboe, clarinet in A, bassoon, three horns, trumpet, trombone, timpani, triangle, tambourine, cymbals, castanets, snare drum, bass drum, and strings. Each character in the story is represented by a particular instrument, musical theme, or leitmotif, including bird as flute, duck as oboe, cat as clarinet, grandfather as bassoon, wolf as three French horns, hunter’s gunshots as timpani and bass drum, and Peter as string instruments.
