The city of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department and Mega 97.1 FM spokesman Ed Carcarey have been recognized by the California Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) as District Eight award winners.

Carcarey received the ā€œ2012 Champion of the Communityā€ award for his community outreach efforts. He’s known for supporting nonprofit groups like PLAY Inc. and the Police Activities League, always making sure his community of listeners is aware of city events.

The Recreation and Parks Department, in partnership with Dignity Health Care, also received the ā€œ2012 Recreation and Community Program Awardā€ for a healthy living program, titled ā€œLive Well/Buen Salud.ā€ That program was free and family centered, aiming to promote activities encouraging healthy nutrition and regular physical activity.
