The Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department has created a new camp for teenagers, the Pacific Drum Camp, which helps teens discover musical and creative talents. The program teaches basic music skills and performance techniques with simple plastic bucket drums. A performance is scheduled after each camp, which will be offered Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Maramonte Community Center, 620 Sunrise Drive, in Santa Maria. Session 1 is July 21 through 25, and Session 2 is July 28 through Aug. 1. Cost is $50 for Santa Maria residents and $60 for non-city residents. An additional $20 materials fee is due the first day of the camp.
