The Santa Maria Arts Council (SMAC) plans to honor the winners of the Individual Grants in the Arts Competition at a dinner and awards ceremony on May 15. Winning artists’ displays and performances in music, dance, and drama will be showcased.

First and second place winners in each medium will receive $1,500 and $1,000 respectively. The SMAC is awarding grants to winners Bailey Hall and Emmanuel Zaragoza for dance; Meami Maszewski and Bianca Norwood for drama; Daniel Ha and Zachary Hasbany for music; and Lily Hernandez and Derick Edwards for visual arts.

Recipients of additional grants and scholarships will also be recognized. For dance, Maya Sherer is receiving the Nat Fast Memorial Grant of $1,000. For visual arts, Rachel Shedd is receiving the Ian M. Hassett Memorial Scholarship of $1,000, and Gold Vang is receiving the Los Padres Artist Guild/Irene Humann Memorial Scholarship of $650.

The arts council will also recognize William J. Cirone as the 2017 Individual Grants in the Arts Honoree. Cirone is the Santa Barbara County superintendent of schools and established the Children’s Creative Project, which provides performing arts workshops to more than 65,000 Santa Barbara County students annually.

ā€œThe arts are a form of expression and communication that is essential to the human experience,ā€ Cirone said in a press release from SMAC. ā€œAnd they truly deserve a regular place in our classrooms.ā€

The Individual Grants in the Arts showcase includes dinner by Phil’s Catering and wine. Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for students, and $10 for children. Tickets are available online at smartscouncil.org/showcase or for $5 more at the door.

The ceremony starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Community Center, 313 W. Tunnell St., Santa Maria. More info: smartscouncil.org.
