The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission will bring the photography exhibit Campos de Ensueños to Santa Maria after a run in Santa Barbara. The exhibit shows from Aug. 31 through Nov. 25 at the Betteravia Gallery, located at the Joseph Centeno Betteravia Government Administration Building.

The exhibit features the photography of Antonio Arredondo Juarez and Ricardo Palavecino. Palavecino is a professional cinematographer and videographer originally from Chile. Juarez was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and currently studies nonprofit business administration at California State University Channel Islands. The two photographed local Mixteco residents, from farmworkers to families. There are also several portraits of Santa Marian Mixtecos, including professionals, educators, and workers.

“Campos de Ensueños seeks to raise awareness about California’s Mixteco culture, their achievements, and aspirations,” said the organizing curator for the show, Craig Rosen, in a statement released by the County Arts Commission.

The exhibit begins with an opening reception on Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. The event starts with a welcoming, followed by a talk by Rosen, Palavecino, and Juarez. A musical performance by Mixteco rapper Una Isu takes place at 5 p.m. and a performance by Ballet Juvenil Azteca is at 5:30 p.m. The event is free to attend and will include Oaxacan food.

The Joseph Centeno Betteravia Government Administration Building is located at 511 E. Lakeside Parkway, Santa Maria. More information is available at 568-3994 or sbartscommission.org.
