It’s been a rough season for the Santa Maria High School boys’ volleyball team, and a number of injuries have left many of the team’s players benched, forcing younger students to step up and take over.
Sophomore Robert Madrigal is up for the challenge. The former right-side hitter is now setting for the team, a switch along the lines of any football team member playing quarterback mid-season. Head coach Stella Guild said Madrigal is incredibly versatile on the court, and he takes everything in stride.
“He’s done incredibly well,” Guild said.
Now also the team’s captain, Madrigal is tasked with helping support and push his teammates. That’s a role he’s used to, according to Guild, who said Madrigal helped out at games and practices during the entire girls’ volleyball season.
