Sponsors are sought for the inaugural Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Painted Chair event to benefit the Friends of the Santa Maria Library. The fundraising event is a partnership between the Friends of the Library; Altrusa International Inc., of Santa Maria; and the People for Leisure and Youth.
The “Secret Garden Chair” can be seen in the Library Book shop, and other completed chairs, which have been painted by local artists, are located in the Town Center East mall, across from Tom’s Toys. So far the most popular chairs have been the Harry Potter Chair and the Twilight Chair. Artists are currently working on chairs to represent Raggedy Ann books, the Velveteen Rabbit, Moby Dick, Arabian Nights, and others.
Sponsorship for a chair is $250, and sponsors may choose a theme, provide their own artist and/or chair, or let organizers provide a chair and artist. To sponsor a chair, call Donna Cota at 937-4807. Tickets to win a chair go on sale April 1. Cost is $5 for six tickets (they’re $1 each). Get them at the Library Book store and the mall.
