This year, the Lompoc Public Library is joining the One Book One Coast program out of LA. Readers can pick up a copy of They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, a graphic novel about the author’s experiences in American concentration camps during World War II. Groups will also gather for discussion and a livestreamed talk with Takei.

Communities from California to Washington are participating in what the LA County Library calls the biggest book club on the West Coast. Residents from each library read the same book this spring.

Free copies are available in English and Spanish at the Lompoc Public Library (501 E. North Ave.) and the Village Library (3755 Constellation Road). Digital copies can be found on the Libby app.

“This is an exciting opportunity for members of the community to connect and engage in thoughtful literary discussion,” the city announced in press materials.

The Lompoc Public Library plans to host a book club discussion on May 27 at 5:30 p.m. and will livestream the talk with Takei on May 31 at 2 p.m.

Call the library at (805) 875-8775 with more questions. It’s open Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
