Bicycle motocross fans have a chance to see skilled riders from all over California compete for trophies when the Santa Maria BMX track hosts a state qualifier race for the first time on April 4 and 5.

The race, held at the Elks-Unocal Event Center, is sanctioned by the National Bicycle League and will help determine which riders move on to state and national BMX championships.

Signups for league-enrolled competitors are April 4 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Riders will have an hour to practice on the track before races start at 11. April 5 races begin at 9 a.m.

Admission is free, and barbecued tri-tip and hot dogs will be available from vendors. A live band will perform on Saturday, and a brand-new BMX bike will be raffled off during the weekend.
