Groups honors Guadalupe students

The KIDS Network of Santa Barbara County will present 13 students from Guadalupe with a Santa Barbara County Youth Impact Award for their service learning projects.

The Dunes Center partnered with the United Way of Santa Barbara County, Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Northern Santa Barbara County United Way to offer the first ever North County Fun in the Sun summer program. Participating students had the opportunity to earn a $500 scholarship toward higher education, while improving their academic skills and serving their community through student-driven projects.

Each student completed 100 hours of service during the six-week, Dunes Center-run program. The students focused their efforts on improving a vacant city lot, turning it into a native plant garden for the community. Students visited the local dunes and the Nipomo Native Garden to research native plants, met with professionals and local government officials to acquire the land, and requested donations and support from local businesses to complete the garden, located at 7th Street and Campedonico in Guadalupe.

The annual KIDS Network Youth Impact Awards will run from 5 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center in Santa Maria.
