High school students from schools across the county are set to compete in the Santa Barbara County Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition on Feb. 15 from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

Poetry Out Loud (POL) is an opportunity for high school students to learn poetry, perform, and win prizes. The California state champion will travel to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national finals. POL is a free program that helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, learn about literary heritage, and compete for college scholarship funding. The program has millions of students participating across the country, and California has the largest concentration of students involved.

The event will take place at the Abel Maldanado Community Youth Center at 600 S. McClelland St., Santa Maria.
