The Santa Maria Arts Council is seeking applicants for the 2009 individual grants in the arts competition in dance, drama, music, and visual arts. The council has presented more than $196,000 in grants to 306 locally trained emerging artists since 1972. In 2009, the council will present $10,000 in honor of Allan Hancock College Fine Arts instructor Bob Nichols. A $1,500 first award and $1,000 second award will be given in each of the four categories.
The grants are intended to help artistsā professional growth, and may be used for instruments, tools, materials, travel, tuition, or similar things. Competitors must be at least 12 years old and have lived in northern Santa Barbara County for at least two years or be completing a second year of study. Grant hopefuls can only get applications at workshops offered by the council.
