Itās not often that a freshman is cherry-picked from a club water polo program to play goalie for a varsity high school team, but thatās exactly what happened with Frank Lopez.
When the former goalie graduated last year, Santa Maria High Schoolās varsity water polo coach Antonio McNeil started scouting for new talent. There were a couple of boys on junior varsity McNeil had his eye on, but Lopez proved to be the most experienced.
āItās been really great having a solid goalie coming from a club program [on the team],ā McNeil said. āThe goalieās got to be one of the most athletic kids on the team, and one of the smartest, too.ā
He said goalie is a āfast-twitch positionā that requires a quick reaction timeāa skill Lopez has in aces.
āHeās been making steals ⦠and feeding direct passes to shooters on the team, which is very rare for a freshman,ā McNeil said.
Playing the position of goalie seems to come naturally to Lopez.
āItās about good positioning and knowing where theyāre going to shoot,ā he said.
So how does Lopez know where his opponents are going to aim the ball?
āThey give little signs,ā he said. āSome people look at a certain corner of the cage, but they try to hide it by looking away.ā
Lopez said he enjoys water poloāthis is his third year in the poolābecause of the sportās level of difficulty and the amount of teamwork it takes to be successful.
He said his goal for the year is to help the Saints āwork together better as a team.ā Heās also good at recruiting new players.
āPeople should just try water polo,ā Lopez said. āMost people donāt know the sport, but itās really fun once you get the hang of it.ā
Coach McNeil said he expects his player to become even more of a force on the team.
āIt can be difficult to emerge as a leader so early on,ā McNeil said, adding that heās teaching Lopez about communication skills in and out of the pool.
Heās confident the freshman has the talent and the drive to carry the young team, which has only two senior players.
āHeās been a huge contribution to the team this year,ā McNeil said. āHe came into a good program where he can develop with us. ⦠Itāll be nice having him around for so long.ā
