In a press release last week, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced it will be offering a drawing for an apprentice deer hunt on the Chimineas Unit of the Carrizo Plain Ecological Reserve.

The event will be a two-day hunt offered in cooperation with the California Deer Association Sept. 13 and 14 on the 30,000-acre space in San Luis Obispo County.

The drawing will also include a mandatory hunter orientation on Sept. 12. Overnight lodging will be available at the main ranch house on the reserve.

According to the press release, three apprentice hunters will be chosen by lottery. All participants will receive classroom, range, and field training in gun handling techniques and safety, deer hunting, and game care.

Applicants must submit a postcard with the hunter’s name, address, telephone number, and 2014-2015 hunting license number to the Chimineas Apprentice Deer Hunt in San Luis Obispo. Only one postcard per applicant is allowed.

Applications must be received by 8 p.m. on Aug. 8.
