The DANA Cultural Center in Nipomo was chosen as the standout location for a special award given by the governor’s office each year. DANA received the 2015 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation, which cited the nonprofit’s efforts to restore the aged building as the reason for the distinction.
The DANA Cultural Center is the site of a California State Historic Landmark, and Captain William Goodwin Dana’s adobe home preserved by local nonprofit the Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (DANA).
The recognition is well met by the organization after several years of coordinated efforts to preserve the Dana Adobe, explained DANA Executive Director Marina Washburn.
“The award is an immense honor to our organization, the volunteers who helped throughout the 13-year restoration of the Dana Adobe, and the city of Nipomo,” Washburn said in a statement.
An official ceremony and reception honoring DANA takes place in Clunie Community Hall in Sacramento on Nov. 19 from 1 to 4 p.m.
The DANA Cultural Center will play host to a local celebration including a joint resolution by Sen. Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and Assemblymember Katcho Achadjian (R-San Luis Obispo), live music, and refreshments on Nov. 30 from 2 to 3 p.m. The DANA Cultural Center is located at 671 S. Oakglen Ave., Nipomo.
