St. Mary of the Assumption Church is celebrating the Year of the Priests by featuring a one-man play by Aldyth Morris, Damien, performed by Casey Groves. The show is also in honor of Fr. Damien De Veuster’s canonization in Rome, set for Oct. 11, 2009.
Pope Benedict XVI called for the Year of the Priests to be celebrated from June 19, 2009 to June 19, 2010.
The play is a true story of a Catholic priest who transformed the suffering of lepers on the Hawaiian island of Moloka’i.
Groves is traveling from New Jersey for this performance. This past April and May, he was invited by Bishop Larry Silva of Hawaii to tour the play to the churches and schools around the state. Groves has had two successful off-Broadway productions of Damien and has toured it nationally.
See the play at 7 p.m. on Aug. 21 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 208 S. School St., in Santa Maria. The public is invited to the free event. A free-will offering will be accepted.
