After Bridget Wilson scored the “winning goal” on Dr. Jose Ortiz, Allan Hancock College president, during the unveiling of the new soccer scoreboard, I approached her with utmost caution: It’s not wise to make the school president look like a bad goalie.

Wilson has no recollection of when she started playing soccer. From what she can remember, she’s always been playing.

“My whole family are into playing sports,” Wilson said. “And I’d much rather play sports than school, but I do balance the two pretty well.”

Wilson has made quite an impression on her coach.

“She could be the athlete of every week,” Rod Garcia said. “If we had 15 Bridgets, we would be winning state champions.”

Wilson is a freshman at Hancock, and even though her team hasn’t been winning too many games lately, she has maintained her dignity and has made the opposing teams work hard.

As for Wilson’s future, she doesn’t have any plans as to where she wants to next attend school. She’s not even sure if she’ll be playing soccer at a university. But she does plan on majoring in speech pathology with the intention of becoming a speech therapist because she loves kids.
