Coastal Commission seeks artistic students

Got a talent for drawing? The heart of a poet? The California Coastal Commission invites all students in the state—kindergarten through 12th grade—to enter the 2009 California Coastal Art and Poetry Contest.

Entries must be postmarked by Saturday, Jan. 31.

Winners will be selected in each of four grade-level categories (K-3rd, 4th-6th, 7th-9th, and 10th-12th) in both art and poetry to receive a $100 gift certificate to an art supply shop or bookstore, and other prizes. Each winner’s teacher will receive a $40 gift certificate for educational materials. Prizes are made possible in part by donations from Blick Art Materials and Aquarium of the Pacific.

The contest is meant to encourage youth to reflect on the beauty and spirit of California’s beaches and ocean. Art and poetry must have a California coastal or marine theme to be eligible.

See the work of previous winners at www.coastforyou.org. For more information, call 1-800-262-7848.
