A Hancock student wins big for his take on student life
Dustin Peterson, an Allan Hancock College photography student, beat out 340 contestants to take grand prize in the Foundation for California Community Colleges contest, College Seen II. The photo contest was sponsored by Adobe and challenged entrants to depict the life of a community college student.
Peterson received $500, an Adobe Creative Suite 3 software package, and an HP photo printer from ComputerLand of Silicon Valley.
Peterson, an Orcutt resident, said that heāll continue to pursue a career in graphic design and photography.
In addition to Petersonās photo, which depicts a 2008 college graduate, four other entrants won first place in other categories. All of the winners will see their work published in Affinity, the foundationās community colleges magazine set to launch in October.

Join Kiwanis for dining, dancing,and fundraising
The members of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Maria Valley will hold the clubās ninth annual evening of fine wine, dining, and dancing at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Cypress Ridge Pavilion.
World-class executive chef Mike Foley has planned a dinner paired with wines from the cellars of Kenneth Volk Vineyards. There will also be a silent auction.

Get ready for a Christmas show
Los Padres Artist Guild is preparing for the 32nd annual Christmas show and is seeking artists interested in participating. This yearās theme is āThe Gifts of Christmas.ā Fine art, jewelry, handicrafts, ceramics, silk items, and more will be sold at the event, which will be held on Thanksgiving weekend at the Abel Maldonado Youth Community Center.

Santa Maria Library hosts its first art exhibit
The Santa Maria Public Library is hosting its first art exhibition in Shepard Hall, just off the lobby, through Sept. 30.
John Hood, 5th District County of Santa Barbara Arts Commissioner and a fine arts faculty member at Allan Hancock College, said that he brought together a group of emerging artists with diverse backgrounds and styles for this exhibit. Each artist has ties to the Santa Maria Valley.
