A local artist gets anthologized

Artist Joan Jones of Vandenberg Village will show varied styles of work—as will 11 other members of the Artists’ Guild of Santa Ynez Valley—in Art: An Anthology, showing at the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center, 1118 E. Cabrillo Blvd., in Santa Barbara through March 27.

The group chose the theme because of the wide range of styles and media available. The exhibit will include traditional and contemporary oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and mixed-media paintings, as well as photography, mosaics, and ceramics. Other participating artists are Ron Guthrie, Gwen Cates, Lori Bell, Christine Brallier, Carol Carbine, Peggy Brierton, Allen Koehn, Joan Mitchell, Doyle Burkey, Mooneen Mourad, and Rebecca Gomez.

Recover through self-expression

Transitions-Mental Health Association, in partnership with the Healing Arts Council of Santa Barbara County, is looking for artistic entries from people of all ages with a mental illness for the 2009 Art of Recovery show, to be held at the Santa Maria Town Center from May 1 to 11. The show will be open and free to the public.

Submissions may be in any medium, including stone, metal, clay, textile, sketch, or paint. The deadline is 4 p.m. on April 10.

A featured piece will be chosen for use in the show and the association’s promotional materials. The deadline for the featured piece is 4 p.m. on March 18.

The event was first developed in 1995 to offer people going through mental health recovery a way to express themselves, and to provide a venue to share art, feelings, thoughts, and messages with the general public.

For an entry form, contact the art coordinator at 739-8680 or by e-mail at patrick-bergin@excite.com.
