Open your eyes for irises
The Lompoc Iris Society will hold its annual Iris Show on April 25 and 26 in the Hancock Gallery of the Lompoc Public Library, 501 East North Ave. in Lompoc. The show will feature about 200 named varieties of iris on display, and some of the entries will be included in a competitive section judged by an American Iris Society authorized judge. This competition is limited to named varieties, and participation is open to the public. There’s no fee to enter. American Iris Society ribbons and medals will be awarded. Child actors needed, apply within
Attention future thespians: The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville is holding auditions for two child actors for its production of Rip van Winkle.
The groups needs one boy and one girl who can appear as characters age 7 to 10 and are shorter than 4-foot-6.
Auditions will be held at the theater in Oceano on May 3 at noon. Young actors should prepare a recitation/poem/monologue shorter than two minutes long. They’ll also be asked to read from the script.
Rehearsals begin on June 23. Performance dates are July 16 through Sept. 20.

Hancock film and video students get busy with film
The Allan Hancock College film and video program will host two upcoming events: The first is a new event called “Wired Weekend: 2 Day Filmmaking Challenge,” set to take place in April, followed by the 34th annual student film festival in May.
“Wired Weekend” starts May 8 and challenges student-led teams to make a short movie in two days from a partial script. A high schooler or college student will lead each five-member team. The short films will be judged by local production professionals, with cash prizes going to the winners.
All the films will screen on May 23 at Allan Hancock College. The competition is open to students and the general public in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. The entry fee is $55 per team, $65 after April 27. Download the entry form and competition rules from wiredweekend.com, or pick one up at the fine arts office.
On May 22 and 23, Filmfest 2009 features “Shining Student Reels” from the Allan Hancock College Film and Video Program. Documentaries, short films, commercials, and other student work will screen in the Forum at Allan Hancock College, starting at 7 p.m. both evenings. Admission is $5 at the door.
