Philharmonic kicks off its 2008-2009 season

Maestro John Farrer will lead the Santa Maria Philharmonic musicians for the opening concert of the 2008-2009 season on Sept. 27, but first there’s a pre-concert event for Philharmonic sponsors at the $1,000 level and higher in the Orion Building lobby. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served, with Farrer giving an overview of the evening’s selections.

The concert will include work from Carl Maria von Weber, Franz Schubert, Sir Edward Elgar, and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Pianist Kirill Gliadkovsky will make a return appearance to Santa Maria to solo in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Longtime Philharmonic supporter Judy Hearn will guest conduct the national anthem to begin the evening. To attend the pre-concert reception, call Executive Director George Majoue at 925-0412.

Concerts are held at 7:30 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church. Tickets are available at Company’s Coming, Owens Music, Medina’s Jewelers, the Postal Service at the Town Center Mall, and the Philharmonic office in the Community Cornerstone building at 120 E. Jones St. Tickets cost $24 for general admission, $20 for seniors, and $12 for students. For more information, call 925-0412.
