The Santa Barbara County Community Services Department and the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission recently dedicated the Percent for Art Project in New Cuyama. Artist Douglas Lochner from Ojai created a public art piece for the outer west wall of the Joseph Centeno Aquatics Complex at 290 Wasioja St.

The stainless steel patinated relief sculpture, Let’s Swim/Vamos a Nadar, is 18 feet long and is backlit by low-voltage LEDs that will make it visible at night. County Percent for Art projects allow one percent of construction costs from General Fund monies to be used for art in a county building.

The dedication comes just as the county kicks off the summer pool season. Named in honor of 5th District Supervisor Joe Centeno, the aquatics complex features a four-lane, 25-yard recreational swimming pool, plus a wading pool with a water-play feature, shade structures, and restrooms.
