It’s been a tough season for the Saints, according to head coach Stella Guild, who said her already young and inexperienced team is also facing a recent change in coaching, and a bad bought of cold and flu. Cruz, who typically plays libero, has already stepped in to fill multiple positions this fall.

“It just doesn’t matter what job I give her on the court,” Guild said, “she plays it well.”

Cruz, 17, takes her role as team captain seriously, Guild said, and leads by example. She’s always ready to take on more responsibility, learn new things, and does all of it with a positive attitude.Ā

“It’s just amazing,” Guild said.Ā
