Dancers with Allan Hancock College’s youth program are set to perform Tarzan during the Magical Moments Spring Recital on May 12 and 13.
Courtney Grimnes, coordinator of the youth dance program, will choreograph and direct the cast of more than 150 young performers in various dance styles including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tap, contemporary, and folklorico. Cynthia Thacker will accompany the dancers with spoken word in a live narrative written by Eimile Pay. The featured roles of Tarzan and Jane, performed by Hannah Reynolds and Lacy Zelmer, respectively, join a cast of jungle creatures and human explorers in the beloved and familiar story. Reynolds, who has danced since she was 5 years old, is an honors student at Pioneer Valley High School.
Other contributing choreographers who have trained with the college’s adult dance program are Cecelia Andrade, Bridget Huffer, Marlene Rodriguez, Madison Yolar-Groppetti, and Emmanuel Zaragoza.
The performance will take place at Santa Maria High School’s Ethel Pope Auditorium at 901 S Broadway. Show times are 7 p.m. on May 12 with a 2 p.m. matinee on May 13. Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults. Cash-only tickets are available at the door or may be purchased in advance through May at Community Education in building S on the college’s main campus at 800 S. College Drive, Santa Maria.
