On Dec. 12, students at St. Mary of the Assumption School will be giving thanks over hot chocolate and other traditional Mexican foods at the school’s annual Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration.

The school day starts at 6 a.m. with a special welcome featuring prayers and music, followed by a specially prepared breakfast and a performance from traditional Mexican dancers, followed by Mass. School will let out at noon.

The day’s special events are in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Virgin Mary. Traditionally, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated every Dec. 12.

According to information released by the school, Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas. She’s said to have appeared to a peasant in 1531 outside of what is now Mexico City. The story tells that she requested that a church be built on the site, and later left an image of herself imprinted on the peasant’s clothing. Many miracles are attributed to her. Approximately 10 million people visit her shrine in Mexico City each year, making it the second most visited Catholic church in the world (next to the Vatican).
