Ā The inaugural Santa Maria Saints Golf Classic will help high school students pay for a season of swings.

The golf classic will benefit the Santa Maria High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams. The fundraiser will start at noon on Aug. 24 at the Marshallia Ranch Golf Course near Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Santa Maria High golf coach Jay Cheney hopes to have 50 or 60 golfers tee off to help raise a few thousand dollars. The teams need the donations to pay for new equipment, entry fees, transportation, lessons from professional golfers, off-season play, and to learn about the sport’s newest technology.

In a press release, Cheney said he believes the game teaches his students honesty, integrity, and responsibility.

ā€œThey have absolutely nobody to blame but themselves when things go wrong,ā€ Cheney said in the release. ā€œIt’s a lesson for life.ā€

Senior student-golfer Diana Ordaz said in the release that all the players are excited for the new season and eager for the fun and dedication to begin again.

ā€œI am so glad I came out for golf because I am learning so much,ā€ Ordaz said in the release. ā€œIt’s one of the best things I have ever done.ā€

For more information, contact Cheney at 925-2567, Ext. 3522, or at jcheney@santamariahighschool.org. Playing in the golf classic costs $100 per golfer and donations are appreciated.
