In honor of Father’s Day and the recent Elks Rodeo, the Discovery Museum will be holding its first-ever Rodeo Roundup on June 13, from noon to 2 p.m.
Kids who attend will have an opportunity to ride ponies from Happy Trails Pony Rides and watch two local youth roping champions: Nick, 14 years old, and Marcus, 12 years old. The Santa Maria Noontime Kiwanis will also hold a campfire cookout, prompting kids to yearn for a home on the range.
The Discovery Museum will also offer cowboy crafts at its Creation Table and a hands-on project that teaches young cowboys and cowgirls about a Barbecue Hall of Fame.
The event was created because, as program coordinator Jonathan Calderwood said: “For Mother’s Day, we have an elegant tea party, but there was nothing for Father’s Day. … This was a masculine theme that could follow the Elks Rodeo, and we already have an exhibit with local [cattle] brands, so it made sense.”
Dads and granddads are welcome to attend, and those who do will receive a sheriff’s badge—helpful if their progeny is becoming a little outlaw.
Families are recommended to dress-up with cowboy flair, and to have fun with the event.
Visit the Discovery Museum website at smvdiscoverymuseum.org to make reservations or for more information. Adult admission costs $12, and the first child gets in for $10. Admission for additional children is $9 each. Museum Members, however, will receive a discount.
