The autumn season tends to mark the beginning of the school year for students in kindergarten to college. At Allan Hancock College, learning opportunities are available to adults, too, as registration is now open for a handful of Community Education classes and events happening this month.

History and economics will take center stage Oct. 16 and 23 with a faculty lecture-film series comparing the Great Depression with today’s recession. The class begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Allan Hancock College Santa Maria campus forum (C-40).

Health and wellness will be the focus of a free cancer symposium featuring topics on cancer detection and the latest treatment options. The final forum will be held on Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. in the Allan Hancock College Student Center, Santa Maria campus.

Other classes offered this fall include choosing stocks; balance and mobility; modern Mediterranean cuisine: low-fat and healthful; landscape design for your home; mixed media collage and assemblage; digital camera basics; basic gardening 2 (bilingual Spanish); toddlers, 2’s and 3’s; floriculture: floral design for winter holidays; intro to basic hand tools: beginning woodworking; living with your toddler (tips for daily life); traffic school; and several online classes.

For more information about these classes and how to register, pick up a copy of the Spectrum class schedule at Community Education (building S) on the Santa Maria campus, or view the entire schedule online at hancockcollege.edu.
