Youth ages 6 to 17 can receive free safety training for all-terrain vehicles during a half-day course at the Santa Maria Elks Training Range.

The program, called RiderCourse, is a hands-on session from the ATV Safety Institute that includes a pre-ride inspection and teaches skills in starting and stopping, quick turning, hill riding, emergency stops, and riding over obstacles. Topics such as protective gear, regulations, places to ride, and the environment are also discussed. Students will be presented with California State Certificates following completion of the course.

The session is funded by the California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division. The RiderCourse is free for adults age 18 and up who’ve purchased a new ATV from one of ASI’s member companies, or $125 for those who don’t qualify for free training.

The Santa Maria Elks Training Range is located at 4040 U.S. Highway 101 in Santa Maria.
