A man who’s been with the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District since 1963 recently retired. His resignation was accepted at the school board’s Jan. 15 meeting.
School board member Dean Reece dedicated half a century to serving the high school district in many capacities. From 1963 to 1984, Reece taught social studies, history, and government. He also served as Ernest Righetti High School’s dean of boys, director of attendance, assistant principal, and principal. From 1984 to 1991, he was Santa Maria High School’s principal.
Reece served as the district superintendent from 1991 to 2000, after which he retired and was elected to serve on the district’s school board in 2002.
“It’s been a worthwhile educational journey,” Reece said in a press release.
Reece served as the clerk of the board, and his term expires in December 2014. The board has 60 days to fill the vacancy. Members can appoint someone, conduct interviews, or hold a special election. Whoever fills the vacancy will face election in 2014.
In the press release, district superintendent Mark Richardson said he believes Reece’s long-time commitment to the community led to invaluable contributions that ensure quality education won’t be forgotten.
“His devotion to education in the Santa Maria Valley is unmatched,” Richardson said.
