OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO: Santa Maria Mayor Larry Lavagnino read one of his favorite childhood books to students at Adam Elementary School on March 2 as part of “Read Across America Day.” The event was designed to teach the importance of reading from a young age and get kids to visit the library. The mayor’s appearance also celebrated the 105th birthday of popular children’s author Dr. Seuss. “There’s an old Italian adage that says: He who reads, rules,” Lavagnino told the group of about 100 second graders. “It’s important to read for your whole life because that’s how you get to be the boss.” Credit: PHOTO BY JEREMY THOMAS

A tough economy might be forcing people to tighten their belts when it comes to making charitable donations, but local school officials said there are still ways to support education.

One easy way to help support local schools is to save ā€œBox Tops for Educationā€ labels and Campbell’s soup can labels, Maggie White, a spokeswoman for Santa Maria-Bonita School District, said in a recent press release.

Box Tops for Education—the little pink squares found on many food and household products—are worth 10 cents each when donated to a specific school. Labels for Education from Campbell’s soup cans and other food packaging—such as Prego sauces and Pepperidge Farm cookies and crackers—can also be exchanged for books and classroom and art supplies.

Box Tops for Education or Campbell’s Labels for Education UPC codes can be dropped off at the Santa Maria-Bonita School District office, located in the Souza Center at 708 S. Miller St., in Santa Maria. The box tops will be distributed equally to the district’s schools.
