The Sun and its sister paper in SLO, New Times, won awards in the National Newspaper Association (NNA) annual Better Newspaper Contest. Early results show the Sun won a first place, second place, and two honorable mentions in a lineup of awards that will be issued on Sept. 29 at the NNA’s annual convention in Norfolk, Virginia.

Arts and Lifestyle Writer Rebecca Rose won first place in the best humorous column category for her column, Generation X-It, and an honorable mention in performing arts coverage for her cover story about Pacific Conservatory Theatre (PCPA) director Brad Carroll (“Lend me a stage,” April 27, 2017). Staff Writer Kasey Bubnash earned a second place award in education for her story about local DACA students (“Undocumented and unprotected,” Sept. 14, 2017), and Staff Writer Spencer Cole received an honorable mention in environmental reporting for his dive into dwindling deer populations (“Down for the count,” Nov. 2, 2017).

New Times earned three first place wins for business, health, and feature photography; three second place awards for environmental, feature, and agricultural reporting; two third place wins for business coverage and an editorial cartoon; and an honorable mention for a localized national story.
