The man shot and killed by a Chumash Casino security officer on Feb. 20 had been banned from the property since November 2017, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. Jose Guido, 37, was killed near a parking structure on casino grounds at 2:15 a.m. that day after allegedly trespassing and refusing to leave the premises after being contacted by security.
The Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that “a scuffle ensued” when Guido refused to obey Chumash security investigators’ instructions asking him to vacate the property.
“During the struggle, Guido obtained the [security officer’s] Taser and used it against him,” the Sheriff’s Office said. The Chumash investigator then shot Guido three times, who later died from his injuries.
An autopsy completed on Feb. 21 confirmed Guido had been killed due to the gunshot wounds. The official cause of death is pending toxicology and lab results, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Once the investigation is completed, the case will be forwarded to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office for review.
