Earlier this month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommended designating almost two million acres in 28 California counties as protected habitat for the California red-legged frog. In Santa Barbara County, approximately 170,00 acres would be set aside for the multi-colored amphibian. The habitat would include areas in the Santa Maria and Santa Ynez valleys, as well as areas near Orcutt and Vandenberg Air Force Base, though the base could be exempt from the listing. The California red-legged frog is protected by both state and national legislation. Designation of the new habitat is geared toward ensuring the speciesā survival.
