Get out the wine glasses. The decade-old wine program at Allan Hancock College is offering several new classes to students and members of the public interested in learning about making wine and growing grapes.

An Introduction to Winemaking/Enology will be offered from 6 to 9:05 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Aug. 27 at the college’s Solvang Center, located at 320 Alisal Rd., Ste. 306.

A similar class is being offered at the college’s main campus in Santa Maria, along with a handful of other classes, including Intro to Viticulture, Soils and Plant Nutrition, Integrated Pest Management, Grapevine Physiology, Pairing Wine and Food, Vineyard Irrigation and Basic Winemaking, and more. A Sensory Evaluation of Wine class will also be offered at the college’s Lompoc Valley Center.

The program operates two vineyards, one on the Santa Maria campus and another in Los Alamos, which highlights industry leaders as faculty members.

Another recent addition to the program is the Viticulture and Enology Club, which features lectures from industry speakers and field trips.

The courses are open to people who just want to learn more about wine or are interested in completing a certificate or degree in the following: Viticulture/Enology, Wine Marketing and Sales, Viticulture, and Pairing Wine and Food.
