Beginning in 2011, students who love the outdoors, sports, and other recreational activities will be able to study for a degree or certificate in recreational management at Allan Hancock College.

Recreation classes available at Hancock will include introduction to recreation management (REC 101); leadership in recreation services (REC 103); program planning for recreation (REC 105); and recreational sports planning (REC 107). All of the major-specific courses directly articulate to 12 different California State University campuses, including Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo

ā€œThe benefit to students who go though the degree program at Hancock will be huge,ā€ recreation instructor Paul LeSage said in a release to the media. ā€œThey will be able to transfer to a university with their lower-division courses already completed and not have to compete with freshmen and sophomores.ā€

LeSage, who has more than 40 years of professional experience in the recreation field, has spent the last five years building the Hancock program up from 15 students to 150.

A degree in recreation management can lead to jobs in many different fields, including hospitality, sports management, and the private and public sectors. The classes at Hancock focus on giving students the real-life skills needed to succeed as a recreation specialist, LeSage said in the release.

ā€œThink of anything people do for fun and there is a recreation student behind it,ā€ he added. ā€œThere is always going to be a need for trained recreation specialists.ā€

Registration for the spring semester begins online Nov. 29 and classes start Jan. 24, 2011. For more registration information, call the college at 922-6966, Ext. 3248.
