Do yourself a favor and get to the church on time this Sunday and Saturday, as St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley houses not one but two notable classical concerts this weekend: An Evening of Chamber Music on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., and the Santa Ynez Valley Wind Ensemble’s Fall 2019 Concert on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m.
The first of the pair is presented by the Santa Ynez Valley Concert Series and features three visiting members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Guest violinists Jackie Brand and Erik Rynearson and guest cellist Trevor Handy will join resident pianist Robert Cassidy (also artistic director of the concert series) for this performance of works by Moazart and Martinu. Tickets to the concert range from $20 to $35.
In honor of Veterans Day, the Santa Ynez Valley Wind Ensemble will perform a collection of patriotic tunes the following afternoon. Featured songs will include “Armed Forces Salute,” “A Patriotic Salute,” and “Midway March.”

Down to the riptide
The Santa Maria Valley Senior Citizens Club is hosting a Veterans Day tribute of its own at the Elwin Mussell Senior Center on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. “Giving Thanks to Vets!” will feature live music from the Riptide Big Band, with special guest vocalist Bob Nations. This local 16-piece ensemble performs big band tunes as well as covers of ’60s and ’70s soft rock hits. The group has been jammin’ together since 2014 and includes local musicians from across the Central Coast, ranging from Lompoc to Paso Robles.

Going south
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s ... Flight 805. The hard rock cover band is performing at Cold Spring Tavern on Friday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. This Santa Barbara-based quartet features Tom Banigan on bass and vocals, Cyrus Morici on lead guitar, Mike Morse on guitar and vocals, and Danny “Bam” Halperin on drums and vocals. Known for covering hits from Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Kiss, and other legendary acts, my favorite way to sum the group up would have to be the Homer Simpson quote they’ve chosen as the subhead to their website: “Why d’ya need new bands? Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974.”
Guests of the tavern can expect a mood swing the following afternoon with a performance from bluegrass band Salt Martians on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. Retro-country and neo-surf group The Excellent Tradesman follow the space rangers, with a show from 5 to 8 p.m. Blues, rags, and good-time duo Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan take over the tavern’s stage on Sunday, Nov. 10, with a performance from 1:15 to 4 p.m. The venue’s weekly lineup concludes with blues and rock trio Teresa Russell and Cocobilli, who play from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Admission to each show is free.
Meanwhile, the Maverick Saloon hosts two notable country acts over the weekend, starting with Pull the Trigger on Friday, Nov. 8, from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. The Jimi Nelson Band will occupy the saloon’s stage on both Saturday, Nov. 9, from 8 to 11 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. Entry to all three performances is complimentary.

The BSV Trio is set to perform at the Naughty Oak Brewing Company in Orcutt on Friday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. As with most Friday night concerts at the brewery, admission to the show is free, but food from a visiting vendor will be available for purchase. Lidos is this week’s featured caterer, serving up various offerings—including their famous chili cheese curly fries—starting at 5:30 p.m.
Blast 825 Brewery presents O’Donna on Friday, Nov. 8, from 10 p.m. to past midnight. Local solo artist Timothy Metcalfe performs the following evening, Saturday, Nov. 9, from 7 to 10 p.m. The brewery’s weekly live music series comes to a close with singer-songwriter Russ Douglas, who plays on Sunday, Nov. 10, from noon to 3 p.m. Entry to all three performances is free. Also in Orcutt, Central Coast-based duo Bender and Jack perform at Vino et Amicis Wine Bar on Friday, Nov. 8, from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission to this acoustic rock act’s show is complimentary.
